  1. California Lawyers for the Arts occasionally holds lectures on this subject.

Registering a Copyright is fairly easy and I have done it numerous times. A copyright covers a work in the creative arts, such as a song, or poem, or drawing. You can get the forms online and mail them in to the Copyright office yourself along with your registration materials. Once verified by the Copyright Office, they will send you a certificate with a registration number.

Copyright infringement is covered under civil law. If you feel that someone is using your copyrighted intellectual properties without properly compensating you, you must sue them for damages (i.e. loss of royalties) in civil court. The copyright registration helps to prove your intellectual property ownership.

A patent covers an invention or process and is much more difficult to obtain. You need hire a patent lawyer do a patent search. Once you are convinced you idea is unique, you file a patent application describing your invention in detail. After review by the patent office engineering staff for originality and feasibility, you may be awarded the patent for the invention.
