172: Roland Barthes

Barthes ‘from work to text’ seems to theorize the type of society wrapped completely in an informational fabric that artists and general citizens find themselves in today. Though I have read and enjoyed some of his other books, I would prefer to read and study his books in a group setting. I have no preset idea of what a class centered around the work of Barthes could be, hopefully others appreciate his writings as well and might have some ideas what possible shape a class like this might take? anathemata and robtsum have offered to teach this course [ offer to teach this ] |

Could his last text, _Camera Lucida_, also be read and/or discussed: it is THE text of the history of photography (now), and it is used by photographers in their artist’s statements, etc. -Robert
I think that’s a great text and I understand the interest. I’ve read and studied it before myself. I personally am most interested in Writing Degree Zero, S/Z, Sade/Fourier/Loyola, Elements of Semiology, The Semiotic Challenge, Empire of Signs, andor The Pleasure of the Text. I’m also very open to what others would like to make of this class.
The first several texts you mention are “early” Barthes — when he is very much a stucturalist / semiologist, and then “after” (during?) _Empire of Signs_ and esp. _The Pleasure of of the Text_ he turns radically post-structuralist. One would also have to read _Lover’s Discourse_ and (_Camera Lucida_) and the posthumous text (lecture notes, really, which I have on audio: Barthes speaking) _The Neutral_ to see this radical turn (rupture?) in this writing and thinking which stayed with him till his death in 1980 … so it would be two classes, in a way. I mean there are two “Barthes” (maybe more). -Robert
