This class is now in the planning stage, after deliberation at The Public School committee meeting 01. The person who proposed the class has been emailed to finalize details.
hi everybody,
I thought I’d post some thoughts on the class as it moves towards being offered. My original idea for it was to have a show-and-tell lecture showcasing some basics of microcontroller programming using a PIC and snippets of C as examples. There may be a need for a more comprehensive hands-on workshop on this topic, which I just proposed here. In the meantime, this class could hopefully offer a good preview of how to get going with 8-bit micros.
I think the class can be a 2-hour session that would cover the following topics:
- What is a PIC?
- What is needed to program it: hardware and software
- Practical programming examples
- making pins go high and low: LED example
- reading digital inputs: switch example
- reading analog input: potentiometer and/or sensor
- input/output: serial communication
- advanced example: PWM output
- What other things are possible
- Rundown of options: other 8-bit microprocessors
- How to go from here
Please post below if you have any questions or comments!

hi everybody,
The class is scheduled to take place this Thursday 7-9pm at a cost of $15 (that will hopefully cover renting the Telic space for that day, administrative overhead, etc). If you are interested in taking it, please sign up by Tuesday by clicking the ‘buy now’ google checkout button on this page: http://thepublicschool.org/20/pic-me/
thanks!

PS. The Pubic School is still a very young endeavor, perhaps some things are still a bit confusing on the website.. please hang on, we are working on it! :)
This class will not happen tomorrow as scheduled, due to not enough people registering. It is going back into the proposals.
I’m still interested. I suspect the lack of interest is due to the tightness of the schedule. I would recommend posting the class date (not only for this class, but all others as well) a minimum of 3 weeks in advance. This posting in particular was too tight of a schedule to participate in.
