MacArthur Park Tour: Folk Art

This post was made to the blog for Specters of LA History & Site-Specific Resurrections

Dear Specters,

This Saturday there looks to be an interesting free tour of the MacArthur Park neighborhood that will tie in nicely to the Specters of LA class, although it is unaffiliated with the Public School.  Recommended!

Best,

Zen

This post was made to the blog for Mixology & The History of Classic Cocktails

It was good to finally make it to the mixology class last night.  I just found out about this Tiki Farm exhibit opening reception at Luz de Jesus on Saturday (10/16) - apparently there will be free mai tais and some free foods and music, etc. etc.  And lots of tiki mugs.  Thought some of you might be interested.

do you need a copy of "the violence of financial capitalism"?

This post was made to the blog for semiotext(e) intervention series reading group

After visiting Ooga Booga and Skylight, I can't find any of these books around, so we're going to print a few copies and you can pick one up on Saturday at our space at 951 Chung King Road if you want.

Just post a comment to this note before noon on Friday (tomorrow) so that we know who needs a copy. We'll ask for a small donation to cover the cost of printing.

The Violence of Financial Capitalism - October 2

On Saturday, October 2 at noon, we'll be discussing "The Violence of Financial Capitalism" by Christian Marazzi. It provides an analysis of the current economic crisis through the lens of cognitive capitalism, proposing that the crisis is not the usual problem of a lack of growth, but rather that it is a consequence of a new form of accumulation.

The first half of the meeting will be a technical walkthrough of the main concepts, with a focus on the third chapter, "On the Becoming-Rent of Profit." For the second half of the discussion, we'll visit the opening quote from Deleuze: "It's not a question of worrying or hoping for the best, but of finding new weapons." What new weapons does this analysis help us create?

Notes- Future of the Public School - Sat Sept. 4th 2010

DAY 1

Brian Holmes – How does the Public School relate to the University?

-No error that the two are parallel

-There’s a dialectical tension between them.

The University in Crisis

I want to thank everyone for a great discussion, and I wanted to know how I can get the emails of people who attended on the 4th.  Bob Samuels
