This will be a discussion (including a short presentation) on anti-electoralism on the Left.  The short presentation will discuss the historical development of anti-electoral positions in the worker's movement from the 1860's to the 1920's and the different justifications given for these positions by anarchists, council communists, and Leninists.  We will discuss the relevance or irrelevance of these and other anti-electoral arguments to contemporary politics, and also the nature of the November 2012 elections in the United States.  Here is an article that lays out some of the problems of the contemporary Left vis-à-vis the November elections: http://jacobinmag.com/2012/08/beyond-november/  .  If you intend on coming to this class, try to read this article, which, along with the presentation, we will use as a jumping-off point for discussion.
