The Canon Inside Out : The Pearl-Poet

+ Attending

The next class of our "Canon Inside Out" history of English poetry will take place on Sunday November 25 at The Long Haul at 7:00 pm, featuring The Pearl Poet.

The so-called 'Pearl Poet' is an unknown author of late 14th / early 15th Century England with exactly ONE manuscript containing four poems attributed to his or her authorship: Cleannness, Patience, the famous Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, and Pearl. (By comparison, there are hundreds of manuscripts containing Chaucer's works.)  There's also a poem called St. Erkenwald, sometimes attributed to The Pearl Poet, but I can't remember anything about that one, found elsewhere.

The Casey Finch book has the original on one side and a pretty good verse translation on the facing page. This is available through Link +
The Andrew & Waldron is the accepted best scholarly presentation of the original with great notes, including on grammar, syntax, and meter, helpful because although the poems are in Middle English, they are written in a much more difficult dialect than Chaucer's Middle English. I've requested the only one available on Link Plus, but you can get the helpful grammar notes in the google books preview.
