The Problem of Berlin

+ Attending

The subject of the last class in the cycle will be protest. The main text is  "Squatting and Urban Renewal: The Interaction of Squatter Movements and Strategies of Urban Restructuring in Berlin" by Andrej Holm and Armin Kuhn.

This essay assesses the legacy of squatting movements of the 1980s and 90s respectively, especially as regards their consequences for public policy. In addition to this historical dimension, let's think about public conflicts in the city today: how do they compare and differ, and to what degree do they reflect not just changed circumstances but also a different conception and practice of politics.

hello all,

for those of you, who bear the german language (me not), this public talk tomorrow seems to deal with the problems of gentrification.

this is a link collection on mapping ( some more on the creative side though)

someone asked about the autonomen movement last night. here goes a link to a book. there are some chapter on the squatter movement too. someone just sent it to me, didn't read yet, but looks good to me so far.

You might find this article from the Guardian yesterday relevant to our interests:

I remember talking a bit about gentrification in combination with creative industry in the second class, and recently came across this report on the creative economy of berlin - some interesting maps start around page 100.
