Despite General/Dictator Francisco Franco's repressive and censorious nearly forty year reign, Spanish cinema thrived during the years of 1939-1975. Many directors, screenwriters, and intellectuals were imprisoned, exiled, or murdered during this reign. By utilizing films such as Juan Antonio Bardem's "Death of a Cyclist," Carlos Saura's "Cria Cuervos," and the inimitable Victor Erice's "The Spirit of the Beehive," (amongst many others), there is a treasure trove of contemplative, understated, and thrilling cinematic reactions to a Fascist regime. This class intends to pursue the overarching theme of Fascism, political repression during Fascist Regimes (particularly in Franco's Spain), and the role of cinema as a response.

The second session, held Friday, March 1, at 8pm, will be a screening and discussion of "Viridiana" (1961, Luis Bunuel).
