"Still Life" Film Screening

+ Attending

The Global Social Factory & Supply Chains study/research group of The Public School will screen Still Life by Jia Zhang-Ke (after having shown The Forgotten Space and Manufactured Landscapes previously in our film series) on Friday, May 3 at 7:00 p.m. in Room 302 of the Redstone Building (2940 16th Street).

Chinese film poet Jia Zhang-ke’s 2006 depiction of the massive Three Gorges hydroelectric project and the damming of the Yangtze River that displaced 1.1 million people. Fengjie, with countless other towns and cities, is being  flooded  and the film depicts  abandoned buildings rotting in the summer heat as workers slowly demolish  the remaining structures with hand tools. The movie  follows  two outsiders  in search of lost mates  who were last seen in the area of  the project. The cinematography resonates with captivating images of a society in limbo, in which the past has died and the future has yet to arrive; the air seems moist and palpable, and even the thick, rusted pipes of derelict factories appear to breathe.

108 minutes; group discussion to follow.
