You just need to Login or Register to make a class proposal. (Sorry about that, but it cuts down on spam and also helps with organizing)

Prison Politics for Anti-Capitalists

Organizing Committee:

We will use six class sessions to examine key elements of the Prison Industrial Complex (PIC) as manifested in California State Prisons, placing special emphasis on the punitive use of solitary confinement throughout the penal system. The course is specifically intended to build community support for the Hunger Strike planned by prisoners in solitary confinement at the Pelican Bay State Prison (PBSP-SHU) to begin on July 8th.

Each course features a facilitator, a presenter to discuss the class topic and materials, and a formerly-incarcerated person to share their own knowledge and experience.

Session Overview

  1. What is the Prison Industrial Complex?
  2. The Cultural Impacts of Mass Incarceration
  3. How Gender Structures the Prison System
  4. Growing Up Serving Time
  5. Immigrant Detention and Extraordinary Rendition
  6. Solitary Confinement, Discriminatory Sentencing, and Death Row

** Course originally was titled "The Politics of the Modern Prison."
