Urban 'riots' in the UK? July 1981 and August 2011

Please join the Bristol Radical History Group & members of the UK-based libertarian communist journal Aufheben for a presentation and film screening.

The recent urban ‘riots’ in the UK in August 2011 were portrayed by the British media and politicians as the actions of ‘greedy feral youth’ or ‘gangs’ within a ‘criminal underclass’. Thirty years earlier in July 1981 over 200 urban disturbances shook Thatcher's government and remain fixed in the popular memory as essentially 'Black riots'. Using comparative empirical research the truth of these assertions is challenged and the spatial and temporal characteristics of these waves of disorders are analyzed in order to expose the nature and process of their spread. The effects of social media on the acceleration of mobilization are investigated and several disturbance forms, the 'community', 'commodity' and 'anti-rich riot', are proposed as useful descriptions of a number of repertoires of action.

The discussion will be complimented by a showing of the short film ‘Rebellion in Tottenham 2011’.
