Electrical Modernism and an Autonomist Avant Garde AKA Location Location Location
A conversation and presentation with Marc Herbst from the Journal of Aesthetics & Protest.
Not exactly an art magazine nor a political journal, The Journal of Aesthetics & Protest has been a weirdo think-tank operating steadfastly dumb against cultural capital and yet not sweating too hard to be cool. The Journal of Aesthetics & Protest- 13 years in context. During this conversation/presentatin, Aesthetics & Protest will focus on its existential art of constructing a cultural/political praxis framed within immediate general knowledges, collectivities, divergent social histories, and institutions of representation in Southern California and the broader Global Justice Movement.
The presentation will also draw from ongoing research into social histories of East Germany, Milan and Barcelona as a mirror to general west coast aesthetic/political practice.
This lecture is based on a previous presentations and workshops given to the Department of Deepening Theory at the Zurich Hochschule de Kunst, CuratorLab at Konstfack University- Stockholm Sweden, and the DIY European Clusters Project in Leipzig Germany.
The title of the thing "Electrical Modernism and an Autonomist Avant Garde" has something to do with electricity and modernism because of media and the hopes for a better world through social organizations of one form or another. It is also an obtuse reference California and Socialism and the diverging poles of a political and aesthetic avant garde. -
