A Conversation About Dual Power (facilitated by Louis-George Schwartz)

Move-In Day and Dual Power

Facilitator's Statement:

Two years have passed since the most interesting attempt to establish dual power in the US met with a tactical defeat.  I see the attempt by the Oakland Commune and / or Occupy Oakland to seize the civic center as an attempt to intensify Occupy’s offensive against the property relation by seizing an indoor space, and an attempt to establish a stable site for insurrectionary reproduction and care work. In order to understand the event and to think about it’s ongoing potential, I would like to facilitate a discussion of a series of texts on dual power from Lenin to Tiqqun’s “fighting commune” and Theorie Communist’s refusal to posit a model of  counter-power in the coming collapse. Perhaps since the Bay Area PS has recently screened the film, certain sequences form La Commune, 1871, we could include certain scenes from the film (which could be made available on line for reference.) As an outsider who used to live in Oakland and whose form of life is largely based on ongoing friendships with East Bay residents, I would benefit most from this event if the discussants who participated in the events of January 28, 2012 would share their perspectives on what happened and how that changed their perspectives on how to accomplish what remains to be done.
