Screening Brussels

From the first footage shot of Place De Brouckère by the Lumière Brothers’ film operator Jean Alexandre Louis Promio in 1897, amateur and (semi-) professional filmmakers have captured the city of Brussels on film. They have documented the impact of modernity on city urbanism, transportation, communication, industry and social standards, which changed the experience of time, space and self-awareness. While this changing urban environment gave rise to new opportunities and sensations, it also brought conflicting and confusing experiences. Focusing on the transformation of Brussels during the twentieth century by using a wide selection of non fiction archive footage, this class would discuss what the filmic representation of Brussels reveals about the urban experience.
