Reading Paul : The Epistle to the Romans

+ Attending

In this class, we will be reading aloud a chapter from Paul's Epistle to the Romans each week, and discussing it alongside Karl Barth’s commentary, The Epistle to the Romans. We want to explore the political and theological implications of Paul’s ministry to the Romans, both in his time and today. Romans is a central text in the history of Christianity, from Augustine through Luther to Kierkegaard and into the twentieth century. Most recently it has become the subject of texts by contemporary philosophers as diverse as Giorgio Agamben, Jacob Taubes and Alain Badiou. This class is open to those of all religious backgrounds as well as to those whose interest in reading Paul is independent of religious belief or practice. We are excited to discover not just the text of Paul's letter, but the method of reading it that we will collectively constitute.
