Walter Benjamin’s „Arcade Project” is a collection of reflections on the 19th century city life of Paris particularly concerned with his observations of the glass covered shopping passages that emerged during that time. Fashion, prostitution, dream city, boredom are among the subjects he discusses from his experiences of Paris. Hotel Charleroi is currently occupying the passage de la bourse, a 19th century arcade that is not the vibrant commercial centre that Benjamin describes in his text. Behind the arcade the development of a new shopping mall is replacing it’s 19th century counterpart. This class will be a discussion about Benjamin’s work and the ways in which it can produce meaning for the present situation in Charleroi and it’s new shopping mall development. We will be discussing the section on 'The Flaneur'.

The text can be dowloaded here and copies will also be available at the psfa-bxl - outpost charleroi hub in front of the auditorium (31 rue marchienne, 6000 charleroi).

If you are unable to finish the text you are still welcome to join the discussion!
