In May through July we read the following chapters in John McPhee's Uncommon Carriers in random order:

  • "Coal Train"
  • "Ships of Port Revel" about Swiss training lake for harbor pilots using miniature ships
  • "A Fleet of One" about longhaul truckers
  • "Tight Ass River" about Ilinois River towbarge pilots

For the last meeting on July 24 we read chapters 5, "The Railway Labor Act of 1926," and chapter 7, "The Crew-Consist Controvery," in Frank N. Wilner's Understanding the Railway Labor Act (1991).

For the next meeting we will read the following articles from The Morning Call:
