Drawing: Traditional and Experimental Techniques, Session II

This post was made to the blog for Drawing: traditional and experimental techniques
This session will focus on experimental drawing techniques, specifically involving the use of color. We will do several drawings that blur the boundaries between drawing and painting by experimenting with contrast and a variety of surfaces (trying to get away from a strictly white paper surface). The concentration of this session will be on relaying mood and feeling, while conveying individual style. As in the first session, the exercises will be flexible to accommodate ranging skill levels. The aim will be to draw together in a relaxed environment. Some materials will be provided by the instructor, but you will need to bring a couple of items with you: - a hard drawing surface (ex. sketchbook, the bigger the better is perfect) - several sheets of white paper - 3-4 colors (can be cream pastels, oil sticks, pencil crayons, watercolor pencils, markers, color pens, etc.) - an image that you really like (ex.

Class "Menu"

Seven exercises will be covered, it is up to you to decide which order you would like to learn about these. Please pick one and begin on your own. As you begin to have questions, we can get together individually and in groups.

1. free draw, a "liberating exercise"
- focus your eyes on your subject and place your drawing tool on the appropriate part of the paper
- no more looking at the paper!
- no picking up the pen(cil)
- if you stop, the drawing is finished.

2. "bamboo study"
Begin with something organic, something that you find beautiful and infinitely interesting. Create at least 10 drawings of this object, draw it over and over and over again, until you feel that you are a master. You will know you are a master when you feel the grand nature of this task, and this practice, and realize how much you really have to learn about the object and your own drawing skills.

3. go on a treasure hunt!

Second Session, Continuation Drawing

This post was made to the blog for Drawing: traditional and experimental techniques

Hi All,

I meant to write a note sooner, the first class was a fun drawing session. I hope you all enjoyed it.

I wanted to propose a second class, which would focus on more experimental drawing techniques and deal with color. We would do several drawings/paintings experimenting with contrast through both white/black composition. We would also try to achieve varied results by working on experimental surfaces. The purpose would be how to effectively relay mood and feeling, also try to convey individual style.

If you are interested in doing another drawing session please let us know so we can start scheduling a new one for early June (hopefully).

Best wishes,

Magdalena

The printed product will be available at the The Public School Party on May 22 and, until supplies run out, at an occasional bookstore on the Lower East Side.

Some style guidelines. URLs are fine for online readings and resources. For annotations, we're happy to include the traditional-literal as well as the expressive-oblique. Two entries follow (and thank you for taking part) --
